Classes of IP addresses:

Please direct me if this is being discussed somewhere else. OSPF
provides a mechanism to propagate a mask with a network route. Is any
work being done on an exterior gateway protocol that will also
propagate masks? This would solve the problem of requiring address
"classes." I suspect that arbitrary sized network numbers would go a
long way toward using the address space more efficiently.

Address and domain assignment/registration:

OK, it is agreed -- someone needs to assign addresses and register
domains. This is a bureaucratic process, one for which the federal
government is uniquely qualified. There is plenty of precedent for
this, i.e., radio licenses. Perhaps the FCC is even the proper
authority to deal with this. It now becomes an administrative and
budgetary issue. How much does it cost to run the NIC? Considering
that SRI is a contractor we should be able to take their operating
budget, quadruple it, and give it to the FCC along with appropriate
authority.

The above comments are made only partly tongue-in-cheek.
