CompuServe operates an X.25 PDN, which provides service for a number
of different X.25 applications. Apple Computer uses the CompuServe
X.25 PDN for providing access to a sales support system. And the WELL
(Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link, a popular computer conferencing system
in Sausalito, CA) is hooked into the "CompuServe Packet Network" so
that there is relatively ubiquitous national access to their service
from dialup PADs on the CPN.
So, CompuServe is a VAN, even if it isn't widely known as such.
