Could any readers of this list help me to find out what Proteon,
Wellfleet, sico, BBN etc are doing in the way of prototyping gigabit
switches? To the best of my knowledge these companies are NOT doing this
in the testbeds. Does this mean they aren't doing it at all?

Maybe they will form a consortium to license and build the Sunshine switch
 that Bellcore is working on???

It seems unlikely that the gov't would buy japanese switches for a stage
one nren. What companies *WILL* have switches to answer an NREN rfq??
AT&T, the Bellcore licensee, and IBM. Who else?
