Al Weis
CEO, Advanced Networking & Services
weis@nis.ans.net
Dear Mr. Weis,
I'd like to interview you, as CEO of ANS, ideally sometime within
the next week or so, to discuss ANS' current status and plans,
particularly in relation to the NSFnet and NREN, and other Internet
commercialization and privitization issues. I anticipate the
conversation running between one and two hours. (You are welcome
to involve other ANS members to participate in this interview.)
In my capacity as free-lance technology journalist, I cover many
Internet-related companies, issues and events (e.g., the OSPF and
Integrated IGPs, Privacy-Enhanced Mail, Interop, and the recent CIX
announcement). I've written for most of leading computer and
network publications, including Communications Week, ConneXions,
Data Communications, LAN Times, and Sun Expert. (For the record, I
also do PR on a project basis.)
I hope to use information from this intervew in various articles
over the coming year. More immediately, my intent is to post a
transcript of this interview to the Internet "com-priv" and "nren-
discuss" mailing lists, and also to the "comp.protocols.tcp-ip"
newsgroup. As you are probably aware, these electronic forums have
been discussing many issues in which ANS has interests and
involvement. There is great curiousity, still unsated, within the
Internet community re "What's ANS up to?"
In response to one of my postings, Steve Wolff suggested I contact
you for an interview. I believe that the lists I've mentioned
would be interested in what you have to say, so I plan to make the
results available to them directly.
This interview is to be completely "on the record." I'll be taping
the conversation, and transcribe it myself. ANS will have the
opportunity to review my transcript for accuracy before I post it,
and to add clarifying comments (but not to change/delete contents).
I will be posting a copy of this message to "com-priv" and "nren-
discuss" (and possibly protocols.tcp-ip), inviting participants to
send me questions they would like me to pose, either under their
name or anonymously. (I will do my best to share this list with
you before the actual interview. I will also have some questions
of my own, and may not ask all the submitted questions.)
I know there is a lot of interest in hearing what ANS has to say
on the record regarding its activities, plans, and direction. I
look forward to hearing from you, and to talking with you in the
near future.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Daniel P. Dern
