the proper way to do this is "telnet hermes.merit.edu", though if you
pick the right names any of a few hundred pdp-11's will answer the
call. that will indeed get you into Compuserve via Merit. as far as
I can determine, this use is regulated by the Merit/Michnet conditions
of use policy which you can get by saying "help" at which host and
following the prompts. there's a reasonable amount of information there,
alas some of it a little bit out of date, and it should be enough to
get you going if you are a legitamite user.

it is possible to get to a whole bunch of services this way, including
Dialog, Dialcom, Lexis, and probably anything else that can be had
via X.25. I don't know what the billing procedures are, and it has
never been clear to me whether use has been solicited from people who
are not Michnet affiliate members. the help service will no doubt
tell you any of this and give you proper phone numbers. note this
is also the terminal server to which you connect to the U of Michigan
library system ("mirlyn" at Which Host?).
