I apologize for not jumping into this a bit earlier. I would like
to clarify some of the comments made by Daniel Dern.
The current ANS charter is to support research and education through
high performance networking solutions. This includes serving the
existing "midlevel" networks through our Gateway Services offering,
direct attachment to other education, research (including corporate
and nonprofit), and government organizations, and through a variety of
"special project programs" and consulting services.
ANS is very much supportive of the midlevel networks in their efforts
to provide Internet connectivity to smaller organizations, and has
worked creatively with each that has approached us to find areas
of common interest.
We will, however, respond to ANY direct inquiries to us, and if within
the scope of our mission at that time, attempt to provide the requested
assistance. I believe this is what Daniel referred to as "retail/site
direct connection". Yes, we will provide this service.
Additionally, the "corporate partners" of ANS do not control the
organization - the Board of Directors does. This Board consists
of eight equal representatives, of which IBM, MCI, and MERIT have
- and can only have - one each. The Board does have the authority to
establish a for-profit subsidiary should it wish to do so. At the moment,
it has not. This does not however preclude ANS from servicing all
corporate clients that meet our Acceptable Use Policy. We will continue
to pursue these organizations as clients of ANS.
