Since there's an NSS roughly line of sight from here, I suppose I should
try to get some more clarification on what each approach is going to cost,
vis a vis all of the other alternatives. The perspective here is not that
of an individual retail customer but of an independent regional or metro
IP network that both buys and sells IP services. (I have a particular
one in mind :) but the same alternatives should be applicable generally
to several other similar organizations.)
Scenario 1: Join the CIX ($10K/yr), pay for ANS CO+RE service ($??),
and arrange for ANS to haul traffic from here to the CIX and from here
to the NSFnet.
Scenario 2: Join the CIX ($10K/yr), pay for Alternet / PSI / Cerfnet
service, and arrange for one of those organizations to haul traffic
from here to the CIX and from here to the NSFnet.
Scenario 3: Join the CIX, run a direct line to a CIX interconnect point,
and arrange for Alternet / PSI / Cerfnet / ANS CO+RE to haul traffic
back to the NSFnet.
Scenario 3a: Same as 3, but also get a direct attachment to an NSFnet
interconnect point for traffic that meets NSFnet AUP guidelines.
Scenario 4: Pay for ANS CO+RE service, and wait for CO+RE to join the CIX
in its own right; this would gain all of the benefits of #1 without the
yearly CIX fee.
Scenario 5: Join some existing regional network, and arrange for them
to carry traffic both to the CIX (via whatever means) and to the NSFnet.
I don't quite get Marty's analysis that ANS is acting just as a "pipe"
for networks to get to the CIX; it appears that CIX access via ANS is
bundled together with a CO+RE contract and all that entails. I don't
see a way of just getting a bit-pipe from here to the West Coast via ANS
like one would with an ordinary IXC.
