You can't make that assumption. I know that there has been a lot of
work going on in making this practical on a larger/faster scale. I
can't mention labs (because of certain agreements I've made) although
there exists on the market a radio-IP link that will get you ~2MBps
across the link.
There are a number of problems and questions that such a system
entails, and its *NOT* an easy answer, in the long run. How do you
deal with the networking? The current routing protocols kind of
require a quazi-static Network hierarchy, given the current protocols
in use....
I'm fairly certain that anyone who is ready to come out with such a
system 'right now' has been working on it for some time (at LEAST a
few months) -- This didn't happen overnight.
Just to prove my point, I was discussing this same idea with some
friends of mine (and a few other people) over the last 4 months or
more! It's NOT a difficult idea to come up with on your own. Now,
IMPLEMENTING it, now THAT is a challenge!
I applaud these services that are coming out, and I look forward to
having a Laptop that can be on the Internet from coast-to-coast at a
low cost.
