My apologies to all. NSF's Steve Goldstein spoke by invitation at the
dedication of the Czechoslovak national academic network. An enthusiastic
report of the ceremonies published on the Well and subsequently posted to
com-priv stated that:
"The US National Science Foundation is making it possible for
Czechoslovakia to offer free Internet access to any college
student or faculty member who wants one, by covering the cost of a
leased line connecting Prague to Linz, Austria."
Steve Goldstein sent a correction to the author of the erroneous account,
and copied me, but I failed to copy com-priv. He said:
"I believe that Austria's Central European Networking Cooperation is
funding that connectivity."
NSF did NOT fund the link.
