can we pull the listserv vs. netnews discussion off somewhere else?
i don't see that it's relevant to commercialization or privatization
of the internet.
well, perhaps it could be made to be relevant in terms of how pricing
for bandwidth or services would push people toward one solution or
another. that's about all there is to it.
in terms of structuring discussions with a large diffuse user population,
thare are some social differences which would bias a group toward an
mail or news based solution. it would be very interesting (Eliot?) to
identify all of the interesting ietf lists, stuff like com-priv and
nntp-managers, and other mail-only lists into a "controlled distribution"
set of netnews newsgroups.
you don't know how annoying it is to have someone on a mailing list
say "don't talk about quipu here, that's for the quipu list" and to
realize that you don't get the quipu list and don't know how to get it.
