Hearings transcripts

Typically, the hearings transcripts are done by a private firm, that gives
a copy to the committee staff, which edits it and eventually prints it
the published record, sometimes six or eight months later. I've seen
very substantive changes between what was said and what was printed, although
this isn't supposed to happen (and usually dosen't).
The firms that make the transcripts often sell next day copies of the
transcripts to interested persons at a buck or so per page. These are
"unoffical," although they me be a better record of what was said than the
offical ones that show up much later.
We are doing research on these type of arrangements, which often involve
barters (free transcripts for the government), and which often leave the
government with records of their meeting that are not available under
FOIA. If anyone has any trouble getting these transcripts, or using them,
I would be interested in knowing about it.
