Sharon, patient readers of com-priv,
The FARNET workshop on "tempering" ended yesterday. It was hard work
(FARNET's new motto: "workshop til you drop"), and we accomplished a lot.
The next step will be to draft a report and send it to the participants in
the workshop for comment and revision. The final version will be released
by the board of FARNET to the community at large in about a month, in time
for the March IETF meeting and National Net92. It will consist of
recommendations about how to improve Internet tools, procedures, and
systems so that the network becomes more reliable end-to-end from the
user's perspective.
The theme of the meeting I would sum up as "we need to work smarter, not
harder, and we need tools, systems and procedures to support us." In order
to make this happen, we will have to work together: vendors, IETF, FARNET
members, backbone operators, mission agencies, and those in the research
community who study network performance and management.
A list of the invited guests at the meeting is attached for your reading
pleasure. The FARNET member list can be retrieved from host farnet.org via
anonymous ftp. Thanks to all who participated for their contributions.
The spirit of cooperation is alive and well in the Internet.
regards,
Laura Breeden
