You can say that again! Many networks today are connected to both the
NSFnet and CIX backbones and we are trying to find good solutions now.

Long network paths between physically close sites has been the reality
since the pre CIX days.
In California, the breeding ground of Internet connectivity providers,
8 at last count , traffic from down the block in the Bay area may
actually come down to San Diego before resuming its north-ward journey.
