It's easy and common with SLIP (or PPP etc) to get more than one window to
more than one remote machine. This is different in kind from the ability
to switch a single window or 24x80 screen among several connections.
Cut-and-paste is easier. Simultaneous windows containing kernel compiles,
a stock ticker, netnews, performance meters, and system management alarms
are useful, at least for some.
There is no technical reason why you can't put more than 1 window over a
dumb circuit, and perhaps some do. (Maybe NCD's X-like protocol
qualifies.) It seems likely that the complexity of such a gadget won't be
much less than SLIP.
