What I've been doing for a year or so is using a 9.6 modem for IP connectivity
to FTP Software, and using PCMAIL (I could also use another distributed mail
protocol like POP) to up- and down-load mail from my portable when it's at
home. I read it off-line, frequently on a commuter train.
The PCMAIL protocol uses dial-up time much more efficiently than I would
reading logged into a time-sharing system, but I'm not dealing with NetNews
this way; I have to actually read most of the 200+ messages a day...
I use FTP software and a 9600 bps modem to read mail from home (using POP)
and TRUMPET to read news at home. At 9600 bps news reading is not
all that painful. I much prefer the interface provided by PC applications
to logging into a remote system. Response to local actions is fast and
I can choose the interface (by choosing the software) that I most
prefer.
