New York and Boston are high-density areas that ran out of room for
copper. They have been forced to field fiber and, as a result, they
now have excess unused capacity that they can sell.
Here in the Bay Area we do not have the population density so the
Telco's haven't been forced to field lots of extra fiber. Hopefully
it will happen soon and there will be gigabit capacity at megabit
prices.
