Are We to Buy Speed for a Few or Connectivity for Many?

We need both gigabits and basic connectivity.  At BARRNet we are
looking at ways to increase the bandwidth offered to the members who
need multi-megabits and we are working to provide inexpensive basic
connectivity.  Right now there are a few members (DECWRL comes
immediately to mind) who get more than T1 capacity but that is only
because proximity permits them to run microwave bypass at ethernet
speeds thus buying them 10 Mbps.  Pretty much everyone else must poke
along at T1 rates.  I am sure that BARRNet would be happy to provide
T3 service to its membership IF we could get T3 interfaces for our
routers.  Right now the state-of-the-art runs to serial sync (up to
CEPT T1 or 2.048 Mbps), ethernet, token ring, and FDDI.  I am sure
that FDDI rates on the subscriber loop into the network would be quite
attractive but I seem to have misplaced the fiber that runs from
Stanford over to LLNL and Berkeley (<rattle>, <crash>, gee it was here
a minute ago ... :-).

So let's see about solving the problems of getting router vendors to
field T3 or faster interfaces and getting the carriers to field SONET,
BISDN, or some other high-bandwidth service.  While we are talking
about that we CAN field low-end services to schools, libraries, and
other places that need basic connectivity that dial-up services can
provide.
