Well, let's see...... There is CREN or BITNIC or something like that :-) :-)

In my years in and around academic computing I have not encountered
any organization that could speak with a coherent voice for academic
computing.  It in large part reflects the individualistic character of
academics.  There may be a few individuals who try to speak up for the
academic community as a whole, but they tend to get little support and
frequently get chopped off at their knees for their efforts.
