   This is true, except that you can't exchange mail or files between TWO dial-up
   users without some effort to make sure they're both online.  Within Oracle, we
   use uucp fairly extensively to provide basic mail services to (very) remote
   countries.  Dial-up IP is the second step, used when at least most-of-workday
   usage is the case.  Kind of like going from cowpaths to country lanes I guess.

The problems of delivering mail to sites that are not always connected
are known and there have been hacks to help solve the problems.  For
individual users there are protocols like POP and pcmail.  We need
something like that for sites.  This is an area where uucp frankly
excels.  You can run uucp over TCP (the 't' protocol I believe) and it
is quite efficient.
