CAMPBELL, CA (JAN. 20) BUSINESS WIRE - Network Application Technology is
encouraging the growth of academic networking by offering its LANB/280 remote
IP router to the Federation of American Research Networks (FARNET) and its
member organizations at a volume discount. 

FARNET is actively promoting the offer among its 30 members, who provide
network services to more than 1,000 organizations around the country,
according to Laura Breeden, executive director of FARNET. 

The recently enacted High Performance Computing and Communications Act, which
will fund the National Research and Education Network, will also encourage
those schools and colleges that have not yet benefited from a national network
to join the Internet. NREN will provide a high-speed network to connect
schools, libraries, colleges and research centers. 

NAT's IP router will allow these schools and colleges to connect to
educational networks to gather information about topics ranging from the fine
arts to computing sciences. Internet is also the principal vehicle by which
educational institutions and research centers gain access to the national
science foundation's supercomputer resources around the country. 

According to Bill Yundt of Stanford University, one of the beta sites for the
LANB/280, ''The vast majority of educational institutions aren't yet connected
to Internet. NAT's offer will allow high schools, community colleges and other
small or financially constrained institutions to connect to internet. 

The LANB/280 is a high-performance stand-alone remote IP router designed to
connect remote TCP/IP LANs to a central network cost-effectively. NAT's IP
router supports synchronous links operating at speeds up to 2.048m bps,
including T1 and E1 links. it uses PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) over the
serial link and can interoperate with other IP networking devices that support
PPP and RIP (Routing Information Protocol).
