Don Morris rejects the use of email messages for product announcements for
utilitarian reasons. He suggests the alternative of a "database" containing
data about products.
DEC has a service, which customers can use for free (or for a fee -- I am not
sure), called DEC Software Information News (DSIN). The service offers
announcements and info blurbs about DEC software products. DEC also operates
an electronic buying service, called the DEC Store, which carries similar
information, also including hardware products, and which offers pricing,
as well as full scale purchases. The store is basically an informative
up to date catalog.
I suspect that once a commercial internet comes into being, such
catalog services (a commercial version of Prodigy or Compuserve) will
emerge.
I agree with his reasoning, however, in lieu of a better solution, I scan
and file the emails as best I can for now.
