Speaking as a former student of a university that had its line ripped
because some general woke up on the wrong side of the bed, I would
agree with the above statement. Nevertheless, we've got a long way to
go. In the not so long run, I envision a bunch of commercial networks
going into the home, connecting to my desktop supercomputer. My hope
is that none of them will have any usage restrictions.
It is a foregone conclusion that the government will dump money into
this area of expansion in one form or another. The question before
this group, is what is the best way to get from here to there. What
actions can government take that will help the networking market
mature the same way the computer market has matured? What actions
will hurt?
I'm not sold one way or the other, but I would love to hear economic
arguments one way or the other (that was the impetus for my previous
posting).
