Well I finally got to sit down and read the March 7 issue of
Fortune. Pages 86-104 contain, to my mind, the best sustained
writing on the Internet by the business press. (This is not to
slight John Markoff's excellent work at the NY Times, but his
format seldom allows him to stretch out like this.)
The two major articles included in this "Infotech/Quarterly
Report" section are Rick Tetzeli's "The Internet and Your
Business" -- a refreshingly straightforward assessment of the
net's importance and potential for commerce (his closing advice
to business readers: "Get on it.") -- and Tom Stewart's "The
Netplex: It's a New Silicon Valley" -- a seminal piece of work
on the as-yet-little-noted geographic co-location of
Internet-related firms and organizations in the DC area.
This is not the usual warmed over, rehashed Johnny-meets-Suzie-
online pablum we've seen from so many quarters to date, but
solid, intelligent reporting that should serve as a standard for
other publications to meet or exceed. Watershed stuff.
Kudos to Fortune and mssrs Stewart and Tetzeli.
