I have been talking to alot of telco people as of late and NO there is
NO T-3 backup to the T-3. If there is its news to me. There are selected
T-1's at certain locations for alternate service but, thats about it.
Like I said in a posting a few weeks ago, there is no way to re-route a
call to a site if its down - down is down. Why does MCI not provide ANS
with alternate T-3 lines ? Simple - Why should they. MCI is a company
that has failed to protect fiber optic cables in their network and has
paid the price many times. I really should say that their customers have
Paid the price. In the case of the backbone ANS could request and obtain
backup T-3 services. The bean counters would then have to devise a way
to make this all work. Why bother ? When customers will accept a "Less
Than Service" - Why have a backup at all ? The biggest customer is the
NSF and they don't show any interest in a total T-3 backup / parallel
system. T-3 circuits are really no big thing in the telephone business,
even though some people would have us think so.

Can't you just see a speech someday.. The Entire vBNS fails apart..
Al Gore is on TV and is asked by a CNN buddy - Mr. Gore why was there
no backup in place ? Gore will just say - We are looking into that right
now. $$$$$ Out will go the dollars and bong another cash cow. Somehow
this all looks very carefully planned.

People have said here that ANS wanted to take over and control the Internet
but, I have to tell you... I don't think Al Weis is bright enough to plan
something as extensive as this. What we have here is a combo of politics
and techies in Washington. Move over and pass me that Sun Workstation
fellows.
