not quite a ruin," she said. "My dear husband is fond of picture=
sque expressions. However, it is not in very good repair; and being unable =
to get possession of it, through some legal quibble, possibly he may look a=
t it from a rather unfavorable point of view. And for the same reason =E2=
=80=94 though he is so purely just =E2=80=94 he may have formed a bad opini=
on of the strange individual who lives there. What right has she to be livi=
ng without his leave upon his own manor? But there she is, and she does not=
care for us or any body. She fetches all she wants, she speaks to none, an=
d if any body calls for rates or taxes, or any other public intrusion, they=
may knock and knock, but never get in, and at last they go away again.&quo=
t;</p><p>In recounting this I seem to be as long as the thing itself was in=
accomplishing. But at last it was done, and most kindly was I offered the =
very thing to suit me =E2=80=94 permission to join the party of a well-know=
n British officer, Colonel Cheriton, of the Engineers. This gentleman, bein=
g of the highest repute as a writer upon military subjects, had leave from =
the Federal government to observe the course of this tremendous war. And pe=
rhaps he will publish some day what seems as yet to be wholly wanting =E2=
=80=94 a calm and impartial narrative of that unparalleled conflict. At any=
rate, he meant to spare no trouble in a matter so instructive, and he took=
his wife and two daughters =E2=80=94 very nice girls, who did me a world o=
f good =E2=80=94 to establish them in Washington, or wherever the case migh=
t require.</p><p>There was but one sentence left to read: "If your mat=
ernal anxiety suggests any misgiving, let me add that a woman=E2=80=99s lov=
ing care will watch over our little girl while she is under my roof. You wi=
ll remember how fond Miss Westerfield was of Kitty, and you will believe me=
when I tell you that she is as truly devoted to the child as ever."</=
p><p>"In this document the value of the letter changes with the arbitr=
arily selected cipher which necessitates it. So a b will in one place be re=
presented by a k will later on become a z, later on an u or an n or an f, o=
r any other letter."</p><p>The same day the cards of Lord and Lady Mon=
tfort were sent to Piccadilly Terrace, and on the next day the cards of Lor=
d and Lady Beaumaris were returned to Montfort House. And on the following =
day, Lady Montfort, accompanied by Lady Roehampton, would find Lady Beaumar=
is at home, and after a charming visit, in which Lady Montfort, though natu=
ral to the last degree, displayed every quality which could fascinate even =
a woman, when she put her hand in that of Imogene to say farewell, added, &=
quot;I am delighted to find that we are cousins."</p><p>"What a s=

out about her and Thorn, unless she lets it out herself in her tantrums. H=
ere comes Ball, I declare! I must tell him."</p><p>"Well, in that=
case," Chia Lien suggested, "you had better make a few additions=
to what was done for cousin Lin!"</p><p>His voice faltered, his eyes =
rested on her =E2=80=94 then looked away again. He said no more.</p><p>Whil=
st the doctor was examining with all an antiquarian=E2=80=99s enthusiasm th=
e vestiges of previous winterings, Hatteras was occupied in piling together=
the various provisions and articles of fuel, which were only to be found i=
n very small quantities. The following day was employed in transporting the=
m on board. The doctor, without going too far from the ship, surveyed the c=
ountry, and took sketches of the most remarkable points of view. The temper=
ature rose by degrees, and the heaped-up snow began to melt. The doctor mad=
e an almost complete collection of northern birds, such as gulls, divers, e=
ider-down ducks, which are very much like common ducks, with white breasts =
and backs, blue bellies, the top of the head blue, and the remainder of the=
plumage white, shaded with green; several of them had already their breast=
s stripped of that beautiful down with which the male and female line their=
nests. The doctor also perceived large seals taking breath on the surface =
of the ice, but could not shoot one. In his excursions he discovered the hi=
gh water mark, a stone upon which the following signs are engraved:</p><p>&=
quot;Them two=E2=80=94the fine member as wanted to be, and young Bethel=E2=
=80=94be arrested for murder," spoke a man=E2=80=99s clear voice in an=
swer. "The tale runs as they murdered Hallijohn, and then laid it on t=
he shoulders of young Dick Hare, who didn=E2=80=99t do it after all."<=
/p><p>It was strange that Myra did not write, were it only a line. It was s=
o unlike her. How often this occurred to Endymion during his wearisome and =
anxious travel! When the coach reached Hurstley, he found Mr. Penruddock wa=
iting for him. Before he could inquire after his father, that gentleman sai=
d, "Myra is at the rectory; you are to come on there."</p><p>&quo=
t;These two lines which I=E2=80=99ve heard," smiled Ying Erh, "wo=
uld appear to pair with the two lines on your necklet, miss!"</p><p>Ev=
ery man was forced to take a bath in the half-frozen water condensed from t=
he fire. The doctor set the example; he did it at first as we do all disagr=
eeable things that we feel obliged to do, but he soon began to take extreme=
pleasure in it. When the men had to go out either to hunt or work they had=
to take great care not to get frost-bitten; and if by accident it happened=
, they made haste to rub the part attacked with snow to bring back the circ=
ulation of the blood. Besides being carefully clothed in wool from head to =
foot, the men wore hoods of buckskin and sealskin trousers, through which i=
t is impossible for the wind to penetrate. All these preparations took abou=
t three weeks, and the 10th of October came round without anything remarkab=
le happening.</p><p>Betsy told me not to be like that, for I had a great de=
al to go through yet, and must not be drawing on my spirit so, every atom o=
f which would be needful. For the General =E2=80=94 as she called the Major=
=E2=80=94 was coming to fetch me at eleven o=E2=80=99clock to face some ab=
ominable rascals, and without any breakfast how could I do it? Then I remem=
bered all about the appointment to go to Messrs. Vypan, Goad, and Terryer, =
and beginning to think about them, I saw sad confirmation of my bad ideas. =
My father=E2=80=99s wicked elder brother by another mother had left his own=
rights pending, as long as my father lived, for good reason. For if the la=
tter had turned against him, through a breach of compact, things might go i=
ll in a criminal court; but having him silenced now by death, this man migh=
t come forward boldly and claim estates and title. His first point would be=
to make sure as sure could be of the death of my father, to get hold of hi=
s private papers, and of me, who might possess dangerous knowledge. And if =
this were so, one could understand at once Mr. Goad=E2=80=99s attempt upon =
Uncle Sam.</p><p>These two, Chia Lan and Chia Ch=C3=BCn, were also the grea=
t-grandsons of a close branch of the Jung mansion. This Chia Ch=C3=BCn had =
been left fatherless at an early age, and his mother doated upon him in an =
unusual manner, and it was because at school he was on most friendly terms =
with Chia Lan, that these two sat together at the same desk. Who would have=
believed that Chia Ch=C3=BCn would, in spite of being young in years, have=
had an extremely strong mind, and that he would be mostly up to mischief w=
ithout the least fear of any one. He watched with listless eye from his sea=
t Chin Jung=E2=80=99s friends stealthily assist Chin Jung, as they flung an=
inkslab to strike Ming Yen, but when, as luck would have it, it hit the wr=
ong mark, and fell just in front of him, smashing to atoms the porcelain in=
kslab and water bottle, and smudging his whole book with ink, Chia Ch=C3=BC=
n was, of course, much incensed, and hastily gave way to abuse. "You c=
onsummate pugnacious criminal rowdies! why, doesn=E2=80=99t this amount to =
all of you taking a share in the fight!" And as he uttered this abuse,=
he too forthwith seized an inkslab, which he was bent upon flinging.</p><p=
>Feng Erh quickly came up to her. "Miss Lin," she observed, "=
;despatched a messenger for her, and asked her in writing three and four ti=
mes before she at last went. I advised her to get back so soon as your lady=
ship stepped inside the gate, but =E2=80=98tell your mistress,=E2=80=99 Mis=
s Lin said, =E2=80=98that I=E2=80=99ve put her to the inconvenience of comi=
ng round, as I=E2=80=99ve got something for her to do for me.=E2=80=99"=
;</p><p>Miss Carlyle went that day to dine at East Lynne, walking back with=
Mrs. Carlyle, Madame Vine and Lucy. Lord Vane found them out, and returned=
at the same time; of course East Lynne was the headquarters of himself and=
his father. He was in the seventh heaven, and had been ever since the enco=
unter with the yellows.</p><p>"When they were brought out of the palac=
e yesterday," Hsi Jen rejoined, "they were already divided in res=
pective shares, and slips were also placed on them, so that how could any m=
istake have been made? Yours were among those for our dowager lady=E2=80=99=
s apartments. When I went and fetched them, her venerable ladyship said tha=
t I should tell you to go there to-morrow at the fifth watch to return than=
ks.</p><p>He was glad to bow himself out, she kept on so. But he thought he=
would do it with a pleasant remark, to show her he bore no ill-will. "=
;Just look at the crowds pouring down, Miss Corny; the church will be as fu=
ll as it can cram."</p><p>"Yes, I am here, Lady Linlithgow."=
</p><p>"Jump to a conclusion to please me. Do you think she=E2=80=99s =
pretty?"</p><p>"I fear I am late," exclaimed Lady Isabel, as=
she advanced to Mrs. Levison; "but a gentleman dined with papa today,=
and it made us rather longer at table."</p><p>"To any large town=
; they are all alike to me; but one pursued as I am is safer in a large pla=
ce than a small one."</p><p></p><p>On the further side of the field, b=
eyond the brook, there was a little spinny, and for half a minute the hound=
s came to a check. "Give =E2=80=99em time, sir, give =E2=80=99em time,=
" said Morgan to Frank, speaking in full good humour, with no touch of=
Monday=E2=80=99s savagery. "Wind him, Bolton; Beaver=E2=80=99s got it=
. Very good thing, my lady, isn=E2=80=99t it? Now, Carstairs, if you=E2=80=
=99re a =E2=80=94 going to =E2=80=98unt the fox you=E2=80=99d better =E2=80=
=98unt him." Carstairs was the horsey man, and one with whom Morgan ve=
ry often quarrelled. "That=E2=80=99s it, my hearties," and Morgan=
was across a broken wall in a moment, after the leading hounds.</p><p>&quo=
t;My mean idea is," remarked the Doctor, "that it would, after al=
l, be better that I should begin by feeling her pulse, before I ask you to =
inform me what the source of the ailment is. This is the first visit I pay =
to your honourable mansion; besides, I possess no knowledge of anything; bu=
t as our worthy Mr. Feng would insist upon my coming over to see you, I had=
in consequence no alternative but to come. After I have now made a diagnos=
is, you can judge whether what I say is right or not, before you explain to=
me the phases of the complaint during the last few days, and we can delibe=
rate together upon some prescription; as to the suitableness or unsuitablen=
ess of which your honourable father will then have to decide, and what is n=
ecessary will have been done."</p><p>Hsiang-y=C3=BCn blurted out laugh=
ing. "What do you know?" she said.</p><p>It was a dark chestnut o=
f matchless beauty. Lady Berengaria, who was of an emphatic nature, was lou=
d in her admiration of its beauty and its hunting qualities.</p><p>"Wh=
at shall we do?" T=E2=80=99an Ch=E2=80=99un asked Li Wan.</p><p>Forthw=
ith he wended his way down the slope and trudged along the foot of the hill=
. But the moment he turned the bend, he felt a whiff of cold fragrance come=
wafted into his nostrils. Turning his head, he espied ten and more red plu=
m trees, over at Miao Y=C3=BC=E2=80=98s in the Lung Ts=E2=80=99ui monastery=
. They were red like very rouge. And, reflecting the white colour of the sn=
ow, they showed off their beauty to such an extraordinary degree as to pres=
ent a most pleasing sight.</p><p>As she spoke, one and all were highly amus=
ed.</p><p>Afy strode on at railroad speed, waving him off. "Mind you d=
on=E2=80=99t fail, Afy," he said, as he prepared to return.</p><p>&quo=
t;Why haven=E2=80=99t I been told of it before?"</p><p>This was intend=
ed to vex me, and I did not even turn my head to him. The house looked very=
respectable, and there were railings to the area.</p><p>Dowager lady Chia =
and her companions thereupon walked upstairs and sat in the main part of th=
e building. Lady Feng and her friends adjourned into the eastern part, whil=
e the waiting-maids and servants remained in the western portion, and took =
their turns in waiting on their mistresses.</p><p>Yuan Yang and her compani=
ons assented, much amused. "Mistress Secunda," they shouted in a =
loud tone of voice, "you=E2=80=99re at liberty to eat this whole table=
ful of legs!"</p><p>A man followed him, clad in a long dark-brown gown=
of coarse woollen, girt with a cord, to which hung a "pair of beads&q=
uot; (or rosary, as we should call it to-day) and a book in a bag. The man =
was tall and big-boned, a ring of dark hair surrounded his priest=E2=80=99s=
tonsure; his nose was big but clear cut and with wide nostrils; his shaven=
face showed a longish upper lip and a big but blunt chin; his mouth was bi=
g and the lips closed firmly; a face not very noteworthy but for his grey e=
yes well opened and wide apart, at whiles lighting up his whole face with a=
kindly smile, at whiles set and stern, at whiles resting in that look as i=
f they were gazing at something a long way off, which is the wont of the ey=
es of the poet or enthusiast.</p><p>"Fly! I!=E2=80=94 Fly a second tim=
e! Escape again?"</p><p>It had not been much after noon when Frank Gre=
ystock reached Portray Castle, and it was very nearly five when he left it.=
Of course he had lunched with the two ladies, and as the conversation befo=
re lunch had been long and interesting, they did not sit down till near thr=
ee. Then Lizzie had taken him out to show him the grounds and garden, and t=
hey had clambered together down to the sea-beach. "Leave me here,"=
; she had said when he insisted on going because of his friend at the cotta=
ge. When he suggested that she would want help to climb back up the rocks t=
o the castle, she shook her head as though her heart was too full to admit =
of a consideration so trifling. "My thoughts flow more freely here wit=
h the surge of the water in my ears than they will with that old woman dron=
ing to me. I come here often, and know every rock and every stone." Th=
at was not exactly true, as she had never been down but once before. "=
You mean to come again." He told her that of course he should come aga=
in. "I will name neither day nor hour. I have nothing to take me away.=
If I am not at the castle, I shall be at this spot. Good-by, Frank." =
He took her in his arm? and kissed her, of course as a brother; and then he=
clambered up, got on his pony, and rode away.</p><p>The conventional gradu=
ations in the outward expression of grief, which lead from black clothing t=
o gray, formed no part of this afflicted lady=E2=80=99s system of mourning.=
She laid her best blue walking dress and her new bonnet to match on the be=
d, and admired them to her heart=E2=80=99s content. Her discarded garments =
were left on the floor. "Thank Heaven, I=E2=80=99ve done with you!&quo=
t; she said =E2=80=94 and kicked her rusty mourning out of the way as she a=
dvanced to the fireplace to ring the bell.</p><p>Mrs. Presty hit back smart=
ly.</p><p>Many times he tried to get him to talk about his past life, but t=
he adventurer eluded all conversation on the subject, and ended by maintain=
ing a strict reserve toward the barber.</p><p>"I do not think so,"=
; quickly answered Torres.</p><p>A sighing morning wind swept round the dom=
ains of East Lynne, bending the tall poplar trees in the distance, swaying =
the oak and elms nearer, rustling the fine old chestnuts in the park, a mel=
ancholy, sweeping, fitful wind. The weather had changed from brightness and=
warmth, and heavy, gathering clouds seemed to be threatening rain; so, at =
least, deemed one wayfarer, who was journeying on a solitary road that Satu=
rday night.</p><p>But lo! when I came to the north side of the tower, scarc=
ely thinking what to look for, I found myself in the middle of a place whic=
h made me stop and wonder. Here were six little grassy tuffets, according t=
o the length of children, all laid east and west, without any stint of room=
, harmoniously.</p><p>After these remarks, she turned her head round, and d=
irected a young maid-servant to fetch the text of the Dream of the Red Cham=
ber, which she handed to Pao-y=C3=BC, who took it over; and as he followed =
the words with his eyes, with his ears he listened to the strains of this s=
ong:</p><p>The place had been easily recognized. A track of blood stained t=
he declivity in its chalky part, and ran perpendicularly down it into the w=
ater; and there many a clot scattered on the reeds indicated the very spot =
where the corpse had disappeared.</p><p>"And it seems he can believe a=
nything of me. I shall begin to think soon that I did take them, myself =E2=
=80=94 or, at any rate, that I ought to have done so. I wonder what you thr=
ee women think of it. If you do think I=E2=80=99ve got =E2=80=99em, don=E2=
=80=99t scruple to say so. I=E2=80=99m quite used to it, and it won=E2=80=
=99t hurt me any further." The ladies again laughed. "You must ha=
ve your suspicions," continued he.</p><p>"Well, if you want the w=
ords of a wise man, listen to me. If I had a great friend, which Mr. Walder=
share probably has, who wants a great place, these are times in which such =
a man should show his power."</p><p>"Do you perchance know what h=
e wants me for?" Pao-y=C3=BC inquired.</p><p>By this time the craft ha=
d reached the inner bank, and leaving the boat, and mounting into her sedan=
chair, she in due course contemplated the magnificent Jade-like Palace; th=
e Hall of cinnamon wood, lofty and sublime; and the marble portals with the=
four characters in bold style: the "Precious confines of heavenly spi=
rits," which the Chia consort gave directions should be changed for th=
e four words denoting: "additional Hall (for the imperial consort) on =
a visit to her parents." And forthwith making her entrance into the tr=
avelling lodge her gaze was attracted by torches burning in the court encom=
passing the heavens, fragments of incense strewn on the ground, fire-like t=
rees and gem-like flowers, gold-like windows and jade-like bannisters. But =
it would be difficult to give a full account of the curtains, which rolled =
up (as fine as a) shrimp=E2=80=99s moustache; of the carpets of other skins=
spread on the floor; of the tripods exhaling the fragrant aroma of the bra=
in of the musk deer; of the screens in a row resembling fans made of pheasa=
nt tails. Indeed, the gold-like doors and the windows like jade were sugges=
tive of the abode of spirits; while the halls made of cinnamon wood and the=
palace of magnolia timber, of the very homes of the imperial secondary con=
sorts.</p></font></p>
