What's wrong:
At least a couple files in the gnu locker are out of date.
Specifically, gcc -v reports 2.0, which is not only outdated but
rather unstable; we should upgrade to the more stable 2.2.2. gdb
also appears out of date, since it gives 'unimplemented type'
warnings on startup.
