As you noted in your bug report, the zlocate service is an unsupported
service. I suspect that the failure was simply a transient problem with
accessing files via AFS, as it seems to be working just fine now. As the
message displayed by the customized finger daemon indicates, you should
report problems and bugs to <marc@mit.edu>, and not to standard channels.
