This is due to a bug in the AIX 3.1 kernel which causes it not to
properly deallocate PTYs when they are closed. The net effect is that
the PTY is left with the wrong line discipline the next time something
tries to use it. `xterm' spews this unhelpful error message; `login'
just hangs; etc.
The solution is to get AIX 3.2, or patch xterm to change the line
discipline to `posix' itself.
