I had a user telephone in the 11-115 that she had tried to run purge on
e40-008-13 and it segv'd
Here is the information about that machine at that time:
[e40-008-13.MIT.EDU]
Machine type is IBM RT/PC
Load information:
11:50am up 8 days, 20:14, 30 users, load average: 1.65, 2.45, 4.02
1) It is extraordinarily unlikely that the fact that the use was on a
dialup machine had anything to do with the fact that purge segfaulted.
Did you attempt to isolate the problem by having the user try running
purge on another dialup machine of the same architecture and/or on
another dialup machine of a different architecture?
2) It is likely that the segfault was caused by a bug for which I have
already sent in a patch. However, it is impossible to know this for
certain without knowing more about the user's particular situation; in
particular, how many deleted files were in the user's home directory,
and how deeply nested were they?
3) If you wish to report a bug that was reported by a user, but there
is no OLC log corresponding to the bug report, then please in the
future, either (a) get permission from the user to mention his/her
name in the bug report (and make clear that the bug report will be
readable publicly), or (b) ask a question on behalf of the user in OLC
and then refer to the OLC Discuss meeting and transaction number of
the log, or (c) send mail to "bug-tracker", which is a private mailing
list corresponding to the person currently responsible for filing
incoming bug reports, giving the identity of the user reporting the
bug. Otherwise, there's no way for us to follow up on it.
