Since the swtich to AFS was made about two-three weeks ago, I have been
experiencing sporadic but persistent problems with my athena startup. The
symptoms appear to be a failure during intialization to grab and/or execute
some startup file, possbilty due to inability to locate.
I am running on a VAXstation 3100. These problems occur about 50% of the time
when I am logging into the Athena environment. Some of the observable
problems are:
(1) opens Dash and custom windows (startup.X) but does not execute .cshrc or
.cshrc.mine files. I can 'ls' all the files in my home directory, but I get
'permission denied' when I use more. With emacs, I get the message that the
file exists but is read protected. The file protections are listed as
-rw-------. I presume I am not being recognized by the system as the owner
of my own files.
(2) I cannot execute the 'add' command. I get 'add:command not found'.
(3) I can open mail with xmh, but the mail handler crashes when I try to
compose or reply. From the csh, 'comp' results in 'install-mh:invocation
error'.
I do not observe any unusual error messages in my console window during
session initialization.
I hope that this is enough information for the problem to be diagnosed and
resolved. If not, please contact me at the number below.
