John,

I would like to respond to the suggestions you recently sent to the
SIPB suggestion box, as a representative of the SIPB:

>1. The postscript viewer is much too primitive. At a very minimum,
>it should allow changing to an arbitrary page. Also, the contents
>page should be moved so that it is the first page (this is done
>sometimes, but not always).

I agree. There are a lot of people on Athena development staff who
think that the previewer leaves something to be desired. I believe
that improvements are being developed, and other methods of displaying
files are being considered. For example, scribe has a device called
"file" which outputs plain text, which can be viewed using more or any
other viewer or within emacs.

>2. With the new academic year on hand, I have already noticed people
>starting to PRINT OUT the xx.PS files on the laser printers: this
>practice will destroy the printers as well as completely clog the
>print queues. (The last instance I saw created about an INCH thick
>pile of output!) A good fix of this may be nearly impossible, but a
>kludge might prevent most cases:

It is very astute of you to point this out. The first suggestion you
made later in your letter, that of modifying the files in some way to
prevent them from being printed, has already been developed and is
under consideration.

As you can see from the header of this letter, I have forwarded this
letter to the "bugs" mailing list, someone on which will make sure
that your suggestions about viewdoc are forwarded to the proper
people.

Thank you for making suggestions!
