   This is a problem.  There are several nets on campus which are not so
   firmly connected to the spine as E40.  Building 54, for example, is
   connected via the broadband network, which is inherently flaky for
   short-to-medium periods of time. 

Not true.  B54 was recently moved to be directly off the spine (along
with E19).  Within a short period of time nobody will be left on the broadband.

Nonetheless, hard mounting of home directories seems currently seems
marginal.  (Hard mount of /urvd and /srvd when delievered via NFS is
clearly the *right thing*) ...
