I've seen this in xdiscuss and xedit as well (and already reported it
to Ralph)....
In the second problem you mention, would the extra text match the last
(non-whitespace) text that was at the bottom of the visible window in
that horizontal position in the line? (I've had fragments of several
lines put together, taking the last non-empty text that was written in
the corresponding column. Did that make sense??)
You'll probably find that it also happens if you scroll in the other
direction as well, if you've got a message with varying line lengths
at the top of your window.
