What were you trying to do?
Log in on the console (type ^P while on the login screen)
What's wrong:
Every character typed in the username and password is interpreted
as a control character (e.g., typing m yields ^M, and so puts in a
carriage return) until you press and release the control key, after
which characters are interpreted correctly.
What should have happened:
You shouldn't have to press the control key before typing your
username & password.
