There is an incompatibility between lpr and packf.
Here's text from an olc log:

A workaround was possible, by getting rid of the ^A's, but it seems that
the 2 commands should be compatible, i.e. you should be able to print this
packed file.
The ^A's are mentioned in the packf manpage.
