RS/6000 dies when using xv

when using the program xv on big images with an RS/6000, such as
xv /mit/pictures/images/cmu-gif/art/oceanplanet.gif
it causes an immediate logout and what looks like a warm-boot.
I have had this happen to me twice, and don't feel like validating the bug.
It did happen, though, after I viewed a bunch of images, so that may have
had something to do with it.
