From: acevedo@Athena.MIT.EDU Date: Sun, 12 Jan 92 10:49:58 -0500 To: bugs@Athena.MIT.EDU System name: m11-113-1 Type and version: POWER 7.3R Display type: colorgda What were you trying to do? Just logging in. When I login, my first xterm automatically checks for leftover processes from other users. What's wrong: I got this, generated by ps aux | egrep -v "^ *root|^ *daemon|^ *acevedo|^ *USER" 18776 4224 0.4% 0% 992 12 - S 9:12 messages 18914 4628 0.4% 0% 1368 12 - S 2:24 messages 18776 4898 0.4% 0% 992 12 - S 9:06 messages 18914 5961 0.4% 0% 1080 12 - S 2:22 messages 18776 11819 0.4% 0% 1064 12 - S 9:20 messages 18776 12904 0.4% 0% 1060 12 - S 9:34 messages 18914 15415 0.4% 0% 1080 12 - S 2:25 messages 18914 17748 0.4% 0% 1080 12 - S 2:23 messages -m I tried to kill them, but couldn't. (I su'ed, then did a kill -9.) Even a kill -9 didn't stop them; they just stayed around. This isn't the first time this has happened. I've logged into RS/6000s several times and have this happen. I've only noticed it on RS/6000s. What should have happened: They shouldn't stay around... note the different UIDs, meaning this isn't a problem with a particular user, but more probably with messages itself. (Is this the andrew messages program???) Please describe any relevant documentation references: [Please replace this line with the appropriate description.]
