What were you trying to do?
See what version of the Fortran compiler was installed
What's wrong:
The f77(1) man page states:
-v Print the version number of the compiler, and the name
of each pass as it executes.
hf77(1) reads identically.
They lie. No version number appeared (with or without a file as
a compiling argument)
What should have happened:
It should have printed something significant, or
the documentation for the -v option should be rewritten.
