What were you trying to do?
whois pt-dom
What's wrong:
On the RSAIX, whois contacts SRI-NIC.ARPA instead of NIC.DDN.MIL,
and returns an error message to that effect (see below).
On the DECMIPS, "whois ptdom" returns "connect: Connection refused"
What should have happened:
On e.g. a VAX, "whois pt-dom" tells me that pt is Portugal
and gives me a bunch of information about that domain.
Please describe any relevant documentation references:
On the RSAIX, here's the message I got from the SRI-NIC.ARPA server:

Hi! You have attempted to contact a whois server at SRI-NIC.ARPA.
Your WHOIS client program is either extremely old or your software
vendor is really out of it. Please complain to them.
To contact the current DDN NIC WHOIS server, it will be
necessary to either:
a) Use a command-line option to tell your WHOIS client
to connect to a different host (NIC.DDN.MIL),
b) Or, recompile WHOIS with the CORRECT name for the DDN NIC,
NIC.DDN.MIL, in place of the ancient SRI-NIC.ARPA.
