This bug report is slightly inaccurate.
When you type, the cursor advances, but the characters are IGNORED.
Only when the cursor passes out of the un-protected label field do
characters begin to be echoed. The printer name you get consists SOLELY
of the characters that are actually echoed.
I grant you that being able to position the cursor in the label, and not
having it warp to the end when you start typing is a little disorienting.
But I like it better than having to have stupid little rectangles to
confine your text.
I've forwarded the bug report to cmu.
Maybe some clever soul will find a way to fence in text so that when you
try to modify it, the cursor warps to the end of the fence.
