Login bug

Within the last several days, my file server, Aphrodite, has gone down twice.
Both times, when trying to log in, I got the usual message about "attach
failed," etc. The workstation prompted if I wanted to try again or abort. I
clicked on the "try again" option. Of course, the machine tried to attach my
locker again. Then, after failing a second time, it gave up and returned me to
the xlogin window. Under normal operation, the machine ought to create a
temporary directory (prompting first, of course, to see if this is what the
user wants), and allow the user to log in using this temporary directory. I
was unable to do this, as the machine did not give me the option. I've tried
just about every permutation of the options available from xlogin, to no avail.
I can only think of one common factor to these two separate incidents: I had
logged into a Vax 3100 both times.

A user ought to be able to incorporate and read mail, at the very least, even
when file server operations are down.

My second complaint has to do with xquota not working on the vax machines. I
don't understand how such a simple piece of software broke so badly with the
new release of Athena software. (The RT version works quite well still.)
I find this utility to be much more useful than the annoying animation that was
added to the xlogin window (which most people don't notice anyway -- who cares
if the owl blinks or the IS logo does its thing?)

Thank you for your attention.
