In tty mode, you have to use ctrl-o to select the option menu bar. Then
you select the first letter of the option. The tty based client is hard
to use, and you really ought to have read the introductory screen; it is
not intuitive. However, if you couldn't read the initial screen because
it was garbled, I can see how this confusion first started. I avoid the
tty based client, personally.
