As another hint, although it may be a different problem...
I have an install program that copies a file into <dest>/<file>.<host>
and then does a "rename" call to rename it to <dest>/<file>. This
rename call is succeeding 100% of the time, but returns a false
failure status approximately 1 out of every 200 times. This happens
consistenly (although randomly) and has been occurring for a couple of
weeks.
