Thanx for your bug report.  It turns out that we are aware of this
problem, and it isn't actually a problem with the address you entered
at all.  As you correctly pointed out, periods in usernames are fine.
Moira does not make any attempt to enforce restrictions on characters
in list members other than checking for the characters *, [, and ].

However, due to a bug in the Moira server, sometimes after reporting a
real illegal character in someone's query, the server will give false
errors in later attempts to add other members to lists.  We are
attempting to fix this bug in the server.  For those familiar with the
insides of the server reading this, it looks like a cache corruption
problem.

In the meantime, if it happens again you should wait a little while
and attempt to add the person to the list again.  Retrieving the
membership of a large list (such as motif) before trying again is also
likely to help.
