   This indicates that nss.near.net returned "host unreachable", and thus
   this *is* as far as the route goes. There are a few other
   exclam-letter combinations that indicate ICMP error replies. This is
   clear from the comments at the beginning of the code; it would be nice
   if this were made into a man page...

it would also be nice if there were reasonable error messages.  this
is 1991; two-character cryptic error messages aren't acceptable.
