vax 7.2R: xlogin

System name: lycus
Type and version:	CVAXSTAR 7.2R
Display type: SM

What were you trying to do?
watch xlogin update the time on the screen.

What's wrong:
I left my machine logged out and idle from about 5pm last night
until 12:50 or so this afternoon.

When I returned from lunch, I noticed that the time in the
blanked out "hit any key" display was not changing. It was stuck at
12:50:xx.
I pressed a key, the login banner came up. I then let it go
idle again. When I did so, when it blacked out a new time (the current
time) was put in the message. However, this time again did not
increment on the idle screen.

I gcore'd it remotely to let Mark Rosenstein look at it. We
discovered that even though my machine is running 7.2R,
/etc/athena/xlogin does NOT match
/mit/release.72/build/vax/athena/etc.athena/xdm/xlogin/xlogin:

[{1}lycus:/mit/release.72/build/vax/athena/etc.athena/xdm/xlogin]
% size xlogin /etc/athena/xlogin
text data bss dec hex
382976 53248 77488 513712 7d6b0 xlogin
384000 53248 77948 515196 7dc7c /etc/athena/xlogin

In addition, there seem to be no RCS identifier strings in the xlogin
source (ident only showed the ones from the libraries that xlogin links
in). The RCS strings they do contain match exactly.

[I've also seen this before on my pmax, last year, but couldn't
reproduce/capture it.]

What should have happened:
	(1)	the time should have been incrementing.
	(2)	the binaries in the release.72 locker SHOULD MATCH THE
		ONES IN THE FIELD!

Please describe any relevant documentation references:
	Mark Rosenstein, xlogin(8)
