The color X server can abruptly exit:

>In matlab, type the command sim to get things going. Use the default
>for any queries - just hit return.
>
>when the program terminates use any of the following plotting commands
>clp
>clp2
>clv
>clv2
>rl
>rl2 (use default to query)
>sim_plot
>hover
>etc
>
>after 15 to 20 repetitions (all of clp if you want) the drawing of the plot
>will freeze up. jiggle the mouse a little and the cursor will freeze too
>after a while the work station recycles

The files in question are in /mit/bitbucket/morrat; I couldn't find any X
server coredump file.

At this point, the kernel logs a flurry of error messages:

What's wrong:
	The server shouldn't coredump/freeze
