Other source code I've found that uses this conversion routine seems
to suggest that the value returned is supposed to be checked. Doesn't
seem logical, but I can believe that that may be the way it's intended
to be used.
Doesn't make much difference to me, since the size increase is enough
that I'm not going to use this routine....
