This problem has been noticed before, and cadill has seen the
solution. Jeff Schiller posted the source of the problem and its
solution in bug-dialup about three months ago, mailing it to all the
people who sent in a message about the problem.

Subject: Emacs Cursor Problems, something to try...

From one of your messages:

When the cursor is somewhere within about 12 characters of the right
margin, the backspace (character delete) key functions irregularly.
Often it works fine, but about 30% of the time when the backspace
is pressed, rather than deleting the character to the left and
moving the cursor to the left, the emacs will instead cause the
cursor to jump severely to the right, causing a subsequent discrepancy
between where the cursor is and where emacs thinks the cursor is.

When I have seen this problem in the past, it usually has something to do
with the setting of tabs. Specifically your terminal emulator doesn't have
tab stops set all the way to the end of the line, but emacs expects it to.
The fastest way to test if this is the problem is to issue the command:
"stty -tabs" from the "athena%" prompt prior to entering emacs. If this
cures the problem, then the tabs are indeed the problem.

You can either now attempt to figure out what's up with the tab stop
settings of your terminal (or emulator) or you can just use the "stty
-tabs" command above (the "stty -tabs" tells UNIX that your terminal
doesn't do tabs, so UNIX/Emacs emulates it with the correct number of
spaces).
