Well, John built a kernel with newer slip code, and also turned off
kermit compression in the modems (which probably shouldn't have
interfered when it figured out it wasn't really kermit, but who
knows?), and now things seem to be working fine.

Meaning that we should close the bug report, or that the bug report
should be left open and we should consider integrating the 4.3-Reno
SLIP code into our kernel?

  jik
